Day 46 Savannah, GA

Crossing over the border from South Carolina into Georgia felt like crossing into a completely different country. Immediately, we noticed more palm trees along the road and the general pace of the south is much slower than the north. We noticed it first when on the highway everyone was driving five miles under the speed limit. Then in town we noticed that everyone walks kind of slow and takes their time.

We went into the historic part of Savannah and absolutely fell in love with the city. One of the few old cities in the east that survived the Civil War, Savannah has a rather large section of old houses built in the 1800s. The best part was that every couple of blocks, the houses are all built around a plaza or park. Most of these plazas have willow trees that create almost a canopy of green over you as you're walking through them. It's hard to describe but it was unlike anything I've ever seen before and it was completely beautiful.

There were also at least ten churches, cathedrals and synagogues that we passed and we heard that almost every ten minutes you hear one of their bell towers ringing (because apparently a few years ago the city decided it was too loud when all the bells went off at the same time every hour so they had the churches space them out).

After exploring the peaceful city, we headed over to the beach about 20 minutes east of Savannah where we found a beautiful, relatively uncrowded place to roast in the sun... literally. The water was incredibly warm and the beach was beautiful! We were very blessed to have such a beautiful day at the beach because we had been planning to go down to Miami after this, but they are having a tropical storm or something like that right now so there's nothing but rain down there. So instead we got to go to this beautiful beach. And of course having spent all our time in the north so far, we had forgotten about the whole being closer to the sun in the south thing. So we got burnt to a crisp literally and spent the rest of the day smothering ourselves in aloe vera and shea butter. But it was so fun it was completely worth it!

  2. Thank you about your kind comments concerning my home town, Savannah, GA. I would like to correct one thing in your comments. You talked about the parks every few blocks and the the willow trees in the parks. The trees are actually live oaks and most of them are hundreds of years old. We also have azalea bushes and dogwood trees in abundance in the city.
